REU Orientation group picAbout the program
The Georgia Tech/Emory Center for the Engineering of Living Tissues (GTEC) offers a summer program, Research Experience for Undergraduates, funded by the National Science Foundation. The program is in Atlanta, GA with opportunities for research in the laboratories of Georgia Tech and Emory University. This program allows students to integrate engineering and molecular and cell biology in the following areas:

  • cardiovascular substitutes such as blood vessels and heart valves,

  • orthopaedic applications such as bone and cartilage development,

  • metabolic, secretory organs, such as bioartificial pancreas,

  • neural tissue engineering, such as cell replacement and innervation.

REU flyerStudents who are accepted into the program will receive a list of the summer's projects for review.

Selection criteria include:

  • Research interest

  • Academic record

  • Recommendation letters

REU Orientation

In order to make these experiences available to a wider population of students, the REU program is not available to Georgia Tech and Emory students.

Students will receive:

  • $3500 stipend for the summer

  • paid housing in Georgia Tech dorms

  • valuable research experience in a major tissue engineering facility

Students are expected to spend 40 hours a week in the laboratories. They perform research on projects proposed by graduate students and approved by faculty advisors. These projects have definite goals for the undergraduates to accomplish. The students are active participants in the research group and attend seminars. They complete the program with an oral presentation and a written report.
